- Restoring the Cosmic Icon with Wolfgang Smith. Guest: Rick DeLano — episode 218 of Reconquest
“Reconquest” is a militant, engaging, and informative Catholic radio program featuring interviews with interesting guests as well as commentary by your host. It is a radio-journalistic extension of the Crusade of Saint Benedict Center. Each weekly, one-hour episode of Reconquest will debut RIGHT HERE on Wednesday night at 8:00 PM Eastern (7:00 PM Central). It will then be rebroadcast according to the Crusade Channel programming schedule (note: all times listed are Central time).
Around 43:30, Dr. Smith begins talking about an “esoteric” tradition. He then proceeds to take sources which talk about Sacred Tradition (as oral and distinct from Sacred Scripture) as evidence for some sort of esoteric tradition. Is this not Gnosticism plain and simple? I’m quite surprised that this was allowed to be said without any challenge. There is no secret esoteric tradition within Christianity. There is Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, which make up the Deposit of Faith as interpreted and safeguarded by the Magisterium. All of this is exoteric, all of this is accessible to all the faithful and plainly stated by the Church throughout the ages. The reason the Apostles could not understand yet was that they had not received the Holy Spirit, which guides the Church in interpreting the Deposit. I have long been concerned about the rather Gnostic and Traditionalist/Perennialist (in the sense of Guenon and his ilk) thought that tars the otherwise decent work of Dr. Smith.
I did not challenge the point, because I simply did not understand it. I did ask him what he meant, but did not, frankly, understand his reply.
